libwww can't handle persistent connections?

Is it true that persistent connections are not implemented yet in
libwww? Just tried to retrieve data over a persistent connection
supplying the

   Connection: Keep-Alive

header, but it seems the UserAgent just times out. Anyone any idea how I
could possibly handle this? Any help apprechiated.
