make test FAILED--23 test scripts

I've installed libwww-perl, but it fails all tests.
I've included the last two (the rest have the same result):

local/http..........dubious
	Test returned status 1 (wstat 256, 0x100)
local/protosub......dubious
	Test returned status 1 (wstat 256, 0x100)
FAILED--23 test scripts could be run, alas--no output ever seen
make: *** [test] Error 2

Test results this extreme would seem to indicate a simple obvious problem,
though I don't know what it may be. Can anyone propose an explanation or
a solution? Thanks in advance for any help.

Some background info:
Hardware: PowerCenter Pro (Mac clone)
OS: linuxppc 2.1.24 (based on RedHat)
Perl: perl5.004_04
libwww: libwww-perl-5.33
MD5: MD5-1.7
Base64: MIME-Base64-2.05
HTML-Parser: HTML-Parser-2.18
Data-Dumper: Data-Dumper-2.081
libnet: libnet-1.0605

All tests for modules on which libwww depends were passed.
