I too have seen this problem, a while back, when I was writing a URL
checker.  I ended up putting all sorts of message handlers and things
into place, but if I ever found the exact source of the problem, I
can't recall.

I realize this doesn't help too much, but at least you know that maybe
you're not nuts.
