bus error with libwww-perl-0.40

I've just installed libwww-perl-0.40 from libwww-perl-0.40.tar.gz, as per
the instructions, on a Sunos5.5 machine running perl5.001. The
installation seemed to work as expected but command such as

get -e http://www.ics.uci.edu/WWWdocs/papers/rfc1630.txt > rfc1630.txt

(and all other commands I've tried) give bus errors with core dumps. All
suggestions gratefully received. 

I have looked for a perl5 version that is compatible with perl5.001 but
without success (a perl update is an option but I can't do it myself and
things move slowly around here...)
