I've submitted a patch which will, when installed, force any https://
queries to go through SSLeay (a perl+binary package which SSLifies a
socket).  It should (unless something happens, I guess) end up in the
next release, though I suppose I can put up the two files separately
if requested (no modification of original files from LWP is required;
instead, you just need to put my LWP::SecureSocket.pm and
LWP::Protocols::https.pm into the right place (and, of course,
properly install SSLeay and SSLeay-perl).
