You omitted too much! The first bit was for illustration of how CPAN.pm
could do it, but as you don't have it yet, you can't reproduce that.

The useful info was in the tail of the output:

>> Fetching ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/perl/CPAN/authors/id/ANDK/CPAN-1.09.tar.gz

Of course you can substitute for favourite CPAN ftp site closer by.
