Well, the current behavior may be perfectly correct by SGML standards
but my point was that if popular browsers such as Netscape parse the
bogus HTML, it'd be nice if libwww did too.  

I checked later and netscape will display the alt text as "[", which I think
is what you were saying the library does.  But my problem is that
my understanding of what happened is that the library tripped over a check
and decided that the <IMG ...> wasn't valid markup and should be treated
as text.  Instead, even if the bogus "]" confused it, it should ignore
it and keep going until it hits the ">".  Does that sound reasonable?
