How to test the accessibility to a newsgroup ?

I created a perl script which tests the accessibility of an URL with head(). 
However, it doens't work on an URL like "news:comp.sys.sgi.misc". I probably 
have to specify an article id. Is there a way to test the accessibility (read 
and write) of a newsgroup with LWP ?
