Parsing file name out of URL pathname

The perl libwww routine wwwurl'parse returns the full pathname of the url,
but what is the best way to just get the _file_ name...
eg pathname is /~darrell/this.html
filename is this.html
In particular, what patterns are acceptable for filenames? Can't believe
someone hasn't already added this.
